How To Create A Website In Singapore? (2022)

For many of you out there who thinks that you are not “tech-savvy” enough to create your own website, I will prove you otherwise. There are so many articles out there but I have to agree with you that if you think their guides are just too complicated, because it is. For this guide, I will try to make it as simple as possible with as little “IT” jargons as possible so that it is easier to understand.

Well let’s simply put it this way. For example, if you want a nice home, what are the things that you require? Firstly, you will need a house with an address. Then, you will need to renovate your home to your liking. To create your own website is no different!

As for the cost of running a website, you will just need to pay for the domain name and web hosting. The price will vary depending on where you purchase them from. I will recommend you the lowest prices possible!

Basically, to start your website from scratch, you will only require the following:

  • Domain Name (Choice of annually or few years payment)
  • Web Hosting (Choice of monthly, semi-annually or annually payment)

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is just like an address for the internet. For me to go to over your house, I will need your home address, right? Same concept here. So, for people to visit your website, they will need to know your website address, which is, your domain name.

How do I get a Domain Name?

There is no such thing as a “FREE” domain name. You will need to purchase a domain name and I would strongly recommend you to purchase your domain names from either Name or PorkBun. The reason being is that they offer one of the lowest prices, their interface is easy to use and they come with free whois privacy. Well if you are not sure what I’m talking about, just trust me and just purchase it from either one of them.

I would recommend to purchase either a .com, .net or .org domain. These domains cost approximately less than SGD $15 a year. I will not recommend a .sg domain as it costs around SGD $50 a year. But if you have the budget for it, then go ahead. You have a choice to either pay for 1 year or more and you must remember to renew them before it expires or else you will lose your domain name.

Do not rush into buying a domain name. Think of a meaningful name or something that is easy for others to remember. Before you purchase, ensure that there are no typos as there is no way you can change your domain name once it’s purchased.

What is a Web Hosting?

Web hosting is just like the “house” on our example above. Now that you have the domain name, which is the address, you will now need to purchase the “house” which is web hosting. Now there are so many choices for you to choose from when it comes to web hosting. I would recommend HostNinjah for web hosting as their servers are located in Singapore (faster speed) and it only costs SGD $24 a year! They are also able to assist you in the initial setup for your new website. If you have any enquiries, feel free to drop them an email or a ticket on their website. Don’t worry, they don’t charge you for questions.

Now that you got your domain name and web hosting, you can start exploring on how to design and create your own website! For beginners, I would definitely recommend using WordPress as it is easy to change themes and customize. If you a customer of HostNinjah and not sure on how to install WordPress, you can contact them and they will assist and guide you on this.

So to summarize, creating your own website is not that complicated and the yearly cost to maintain is around SGD $40 a year.
